Baroque Farm Buildings

Now a centre for living art and culture

Castle Dennenlohe also boasts an impressive baroque farm, consisting of an 80 metre long yard with stalls and barns on all four sides. It has always been the financial mainstay of the castle and its residents.

Besides forestry, arable and lake-land farming, there is also a brewery, a sawmill and a weaving mill. Up until 1823 courts were held in the administrator’s office. The gallows were just 500 metres west of the farm.

In 1965 the farming facilities were leased out. At the end of 2003 Baron Süsskind decided to totally restore the baroque farm buildings, in light of the fact that the castle gardens and special events had become such popular tourist attractions. The baroque farm became a sightseeing attraction in itself and the old farm buildings were put to new use.

In the historical riding hall horses were trained for the cavalry - today it serves as an Art Gallery and Concert Hall.

The Vintage Car Museum is located in the historical cow shed and barn which dates back to 1700. In the old days linen would be hung out to dry on the first floor, and hops would be left to ferment on the second floor.

Forty cars and just as many motorbikes are on display in the museum, including the grandfather of all cars - an original model of the motor car for which Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler were awarded a patent in 1886. The Motorized Age was now ready to start.

Most of the cars date from the 1930s to the 1950s and are all roadworthy. The Museum is sponsored by a private club of vintage car lovers. One of the highlights is the state limousine in which Konrad Adenauer, Willy Brandt and John F. Kennedy were driven around Berlin in 1963.
